The courtyard with palms and a tiled pool

The House.

A courtyard at the centre, the sea at the end of the corridor, and forty-two rooms in between.

01 — The Story

A courtyard, a corridor, and the sea.

The hotel was planned from the inside out. Stand in the courtyard and the city disappears behind the palms; walk the corridor and the water reappears at every window. Everything else — the lime plaster, the teak, the cotton, the quiet — is there to keep that simple view undisturbed.

We are a small house by Mumbai standards, and we prefer it that way. The concierge knows the regulars, the kitchen knows what came off the boat at Sassoon Dock this morning, and nobody will hurry you out of your chair.

Most guests arrive for a night or two and stay for four. We take that as the best review we can get.

02 — What We Believe

Quietly, properly done.

Three rules we keep coming back to, whether we are turning down a bed or planning a wedding lunch.

01

Quiet luxury

Nothing here shouts. Good linen, warm light, a bed that is actually comfortable. The details should be felt, not announced.

02

Local first

The kitchen shops the Mumbai markets. The art is by Mumbai artists. The advice at the desk is from people who live here.

03

Nothing rushed

Breakfast runs until eleven. Check-out is flexible when we can manage it. A good stay should not feel like a schedule.
